Audits aren’t always bad 

Saving energy in your home or business starts with an energy audit: 

•  How much energy is being consumed? 
•  How does energy consumption vary during the year? 
•  How much energy is consumed by devices and systems? 
•  Are those devices and systems operating efficiently? 
•  Is lighting and HVAC optimizing productivity and comfort?

Who sets the standards? 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star Program helps to establish energy efficiency parameters and guidelines for buildings. 

Furthermore, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) defines three levels of energy audits:  

Which audit fits your needs 

Level I: Site Assessment or Preliminary Audits identify no-cost and low-cost energy saving opportunities, and a general view of potential energy efficiency improvements.  

Level II: Energy Survey and Engineering Analysis Audits includes Level I results and makes recommendations for EEMs based on detailed energy costs, energy usage and building characteristics and provides a more in-depth analysis matching the client’s financial goals with potential energy savings efforts. 

Level III: Detailed Analysis of Capital-Intensive Modification Audits. This level is often called an “investment grade” audit because it includes all Level I and Level II information and adds monitoring, data collection and engineering analysis, detailed recommendations and financial analysis for major capital investments.
